1. Please Draw Something Other Than Anime

I saw a similar confession, so I thought I’d be honest, it’s sort of embarrassing, but here I go. From age 9-15 I drew almost nothing but anime. Around ages 13-14 I expanded a bit but I still would draw sketchbooks and sketchbooks full of it. I was under the weird delusion that I would one day become a famous mangaka and move to Japan and live in a happy manga land of fun. Whenever teachers would tell me to draw something else, I would get mad and whine about them not understanding my style. That art teacher was a jerk and not very good, but I learned what the human figure does not look like. Despite only drawing manga I was still the best artist in the class, so for the most part I got away with it. My mother tried to get me interested in different artists and I would snub them in favor of what was on deviantart.

    [CUT]

anime isn’t a ~real~ style and if you draw in it you are automatically bad and cannot appreciate real art

also if you draw in it you must automatically want to be a mangaka and thus you’re delusional if you’re american and think drawing in an anime style is okay

no one over the age of 15-ish should draw in an anime style because it’s an easy style and everything in it looks the same

    in short:

“Anime” isn’t even a singular style. What is so hard to get about these things?

You can’t explain that anime isn’t a singular style to those who think they’re top shit because they “don’t draw anime anymore”and have this mentality that “anime is for teenagers and if you grow out of anime you’re a real artist”, bullshit

I like how the OP says that since you’re not japanese you can’t draw anime and have no hopes of being a mangaka or whatever when that’s completely not the case… it;’s harder for non japanese to be mangaka IN Japan but it’s not impossible…. many people who want to be mangaka at an early age won’t even become one anyway because they’re too lazy to actually learn japanese or don’t have the patience to do comics.. there’s many publishers in japan that will take in foreign entries, I keep an eye on them. But they prefer entries from people who are fluent in Japanese… and not only that there’s still a few publishers in the US that are taking in stuff…

and the thing that always gets me is that people think anime is just one style.. you know the typical kawaii moe desu generic stuff but they completely ignore the more Realistic anime styles… I like cartoons period, if it’ anime or not if it’s fun to watch then I’ll be a fan of it, there’s ton of anime i despise and there’s a ton of western cartoons i despise.. I prefer older stuff but that’s my personal preference.. it doesn’t mean older cartoons are generally better, but they are better in “MY OPINION”but my opinion is the key word and just because it’s my opinion doesn’t mean I’m right nor does it mean I should tell people to stop drawing in a more modern cartoon/anime style because I don’t like it.. that’s just stupid and selfish

there were times I felt guilty about drawing anime because I have lost friends because I still draw it and how some of them look down on me because I choose to draw anime.. I can draw realism if I want.. I have before, I practice it, I draw landscapes I draw animals, people(rarely) but I learned that if people are that close minded about art in general then it’s best not to be friends with people who don’t know how to respect your choices in art.. even if you know how to draw other things…

as I said in another post “anime” is just as unrealistic as non-anime cartoons… they’re cartoons, anime or not, a lot of cartoons tend to exaggerate anatomy and a lot of the professionals who create anime know how to draw things that are realistic, just like a lot of professional western cartoonists.. They’re the same damn thing except from different countries and use different words to separate them based on how different they look. Anime is basically inspired by American cartoons then they just went on their own path to look a bit different from your typical American cartoon.. there was a time when anime and western cartoons didn’t look that much different…. then of course now Americans cartoons are inspired by Japanese cartoons and people are having a shitfest over it because of the same mentality that anime should stay in japan but it’s OK for japan to take on more western styled cartoons… it’s all stupid.. a cartoon is a cartoon, there’s always going to be cartoons that look more appealing to different types of people, just because you don’t happen to like one particular style of cartoon doesn’t mean it’s inferior to everything else.

    anime is short for animation
